about

I am professor at a Western Washington University in a dedicated design department in the Pacific Northwest USA. I recently returned from professional leave where I spent the academic year in New Zealand. This blog is a record (quite literally a transcript of my notebooks at this point and in its infancy) of those experiences, connecting four key areas:

design thinking
A methodology combining empathy, observation, definition, prototyping, iteration and testing and analysis

distributed power
models for sharing power and collaboration

communication frameworks
Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication as a path to understanding ourselves and relationships to others

mindfulness
practices that encourage knowing that comes from both thinking about and sensing into experience.

I am also a designer with interests ranging from supporting social justice causes, social entrepreneurs and non-profits to small business. I am passionate about creating meaningful experiences for groups in educational and developmental settings.
